At European Automotive, we enjoy working with owners and enthusiasts who know a lot about tuning… and, those that don’t!
The fact is, they both come to us for the same thing…
MORE POWER, PERFORMANCE + ENJOYMENT!
This article walks you through some of the fundamentals and available options when considering tuning your vehicle.
(If you’re already pretty knowledgeable on tuning, this isn’t likely keep an eye out for content diving into more in-depth details here in the blog soon!)
INTRODUCTION
Cars have moved from the delivery of muscle en masse, to increasing equal amounts of power and intelligence in order to go faster! With this intelligence, comes the opportunity to map or tune the ECU that controls your vehicle’s engine.
Unlocking greater power and performance from the engine is by far the biggest reason people choose to tune their vehicle.
People also choose tuning (or Performance Software) for:
– Adjustable fuel maps
– Adjustable exhaust burble and engine cooling
– Speed limiter removal
– Cold start delete
– Exhaust flap control
– Fuel efficiency
THE HUB OF EVERY TUNE – THE ECU
Every car powered by an injection system uses a device called an Electronic Control Unit (ECU).
An ECU is a specialized computer responsible for the parameters of the engine performance under every condition of car speed and load. To ensure that parameters are correct under every condition, a map of fuel supply and ignition control is available for the ECU. This map specifies approximate values of power supply and steering for current conditions in the engine.
When you look after your car properly, and follow the proper maintenance schedule, our Tuning Services offer you the opportunity to maximize your horsepower the manufacturers of your car refused to give you.
The other “CU” – the TCU!
In terms of tuning and performance, a TCU, or Transmission Control Unit, is also software based and can be adjusted to provide you with significant changes in the way your gearbox works. Just some of the changes include:
- Redline adjustment
- Shifting time reduction
- Downshifting during deceleration
- Rev limits adjustment
- Manual mode delay adjustment
- Launch control revs adjustment
- Improvement in shifting smoothness
- Optimizing automatic transmission modes to suit your driving style
- Increase in torque limitations
We work with locally-based MG Flasher for BMW F&G series vehicles with B58/S58/B48 engine platforms.
MG Flasher offers not only incredible power and torque curves, but also the seamless integration and ease-of-use stand out in the marketplace. Check out these incredible features:
+ Switchable Maps On-The-Fly + Ethanol Blends + Max Cooling On-The-Fly
+ Torque Limit Adjustability+ Speed limit removal+ Startup Roar + Burble flame map
If you’ve been considering MG Flasher but are not sure if it’s something you want to tackle on your own (or you want further work done as well), we’d be happy to assist you!

STAGES 1,2,3, + OF TUNING
A stage represents a set of upgrades fitted as a set. As you might expect, a stage is how far you’ve gone with tuning part of your car. Stage 2 represents a more tuned car than stage 1. Where things can get a bit confusing is that what each “stage” means can vary from car to car, and even from tuner to tuner.
Here’s a the rough guide on each stage:
STAGE 1
Modifications that can be fitted on their own to a standard car.
– Engine remapping
– Air intakes
– Exhausts
STAGE 2
Can be a little different between brands, but the common theme tends to be removing limiting of the exhaust in combination with software
– Engine remapping
– Exhaust downpipe
– Air intake / air induction kit
– Engine and gearbox mounts
STAGE 3
Exactly which components vary from car to car. Higher stage remaps vary greatly from engine to engine. Includes everything in Stage 2 +
– Fuel injectors
– Fuel pump
– Turbocharger
– Engine internals
Regardless of which stage of tuning, other smart upgrades to consider also include:
POWER GAINS
The example above provides a great example of the specific power for the B58 under MG Flasher’s presets. There are generally a lot of possible power and torque gains for most engines… just tell us what you’re looking for based on your vehicle and we’ll take care of it!
